The one thing I need to recommend to all fishkeepers is the use of live plants.  Even those who weren't gifted with a "green thumb" like myself can grow all the plants pictured below.  I can do it, therefore you can as well.  I mostly use floating plants to help keep the tanks clean and they help to provide shelter for the fish and especially the fry.  Plants also provide homes for microscopic invertebrates the small fish and fry eat.  I don't fertilize or do anything special.
