New World Cichlids

New world refers to the America's (north, south, and central) as well as the Caribbean.  Many of the most popular fish species come from these regions; angelfish, discus, apistogramma, oscars, and tetras.  At one time I was into raising apistos but have moved away from them for now.  I have never kept angelfish or discus either.  Tetras have proved difficult for me to breed.  I'm not savvy enough to remove the spawning mops in time I guess.

Guianacara stergiosi "Rio Coroni"

These are my new favorite cichlid!  The colors are not bright or intense but the markings are just so cool looking.  I started them in a 55 now they are out in the 400 gallon tub for the summer.

Currently keeping.

Pearl Eartheater (Geophagus braziliensis)

Another ATL auction steal of a deal.  Had these growing out in a 55g until they reached around 2".  Now they are in a 150g trough with garland, driftwood, flower pots, and a sand substrate.

Currently keeping.

Apistogramma caucatoides

I had my first cichlid spawn with a pair of these I got from the AAAA auction.  I put them into a 10 gallon tank and within two days they were on eggs.  All fry ended up male so I got rid of the lot and started with something new.

Apistogramma panduro

Richard gave me a reverse trio of these beautiful fish.  I took the best looking male and put him with the female in a 20 gallon tank outside filled with driftwood and oak leaves.  The glass got covered in algae and now I cannot tell what's been going on in there.  I put in a small abn to clean things up.

Cichlasoma dimerus

These were obtained from the AAAA auction at a small size.  They were moved into a 20g outside and have doubled in size in a couple weeks while outdoors.  They remind me of the sun fishes in color and pattern.

Apistogramma borelli "Belle Union"

Grabbed a trio from the AAAA Spring Auction and put them into the L. vittata 10g tank.  Since, one of the female perished but the pair seem to be doing alright.  Update - both have died.  I have terrible luck with Apistos.

Cryptoheros cutteri

Obtained 6 from a friend.  They were less than an inch but are growing well outside.  They appear to be like the convict but have a more yellow color.  Currently keeping.

Cryptoheros chetumalensis

These guys remind me greatly of convict cichlids but seem less aggressive.  They are currently growing out in a 55g with rotkeil and kribs with no issues.

Krobia sp. xingu "red cheek"

This species was just recently named.  They are related to the thyeri which I keep as well.  Xingu refers to the river in which they are found.  I've been told they breed quickly and often once mature.  Their red cheeks are something to see, and they turn black when breeding.  I keep them in a 55g with some rainbow cichlids and they have spawned but ate the eggs.

Gold Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi)

Picked these up from joegargas on Aquabid.  Recently moved these to a 55g with angels and corycats.  They've grown fast and are nearing breeding age.  A pair has formed and laid eggs but I failed to pull them before they were eaten.

Redhead Severum (Heros rotkeil)

I received 6 of these from the ATL fall auction for a steal of $3.  Felt bad but the seller had tons.  They are growing out in a 55 barebottom feeding on a mixture of flakes and pellets.

(Pterophyllum scalare)

I received 10 of these dime sized from joegargas on Aquabid.  They were moved to a 20H outside and fed a mixture of flake 2-3 times daily during the summer months.  Since the move they have grown very quickly.  Six of them have paired up.  One pair inside with gold rams, the other two pairs outside with sailfin mollies.

Severum (Heros cf severus)

Got 4 of these mouthbrooding severums from AquaBid (coder14).  Put them into a 35g tall tank with sand substrate.  Research says they are aggressive and hard to breed; fingers crossed.

Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher)

I bought 7 of these from Joe Gargas.  This interaction was negative and I feel I was ripped off, but the fish look great. They arrived in excellent condition and are now in a 55g with swordtails.  They are fed a mix of flake, small pellet, and decapsulated brine shrimp. They are growing fast and I'm waiting for them to pair off.

Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus)

In my attempt to get my wife into the hobby, I took her to a LFS and let her pick out a fish.  She picked an oscar and it has been fun to raise.

Keyhole Cichlid (Cleithracara maronii)

I was able to obtain 5 of these from a LFS for a very good price.  They went into a 55g with a pair of kribs.  They were constantly laying eggs but the other keyholes would eat them!  I've moved the two I believe to be paired up to a 40 breeder and they have laid eggs twice since.  Unfortunatly they fungused over.  Very peaceful fish and in my opinion, elegant with their flowing fins.

Rainbow Cichlid (Archocentrus multispinosus)

Got a pair of these at an auction and they have bred lots of time.  They seem to breed when the lights are out for an extended period of time.  Everytime we come back from vacation, they are guarding fry.  Unfortunetly, they eat the fry EVERY TIME.  I need to pull them....Beautiful colors, especially when breeding.  They can change colors based on their moods.  I've seen my female jet black before.

Currently keeping.

Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata)

Got some young ones from a guy on craigslist and grew them out.  A pair formed and now breed readliy in my 90g.  I used to pull as many fry as I could and raise them.  Now they are food for their tankmates. They have a reputation of being aggressive (hence the name) but are far from the dominante fish in their tank.

Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata)

If you have the tank space this is the fish for you.  They will breed anywhere at any time.  I added a bunch of 1/2" young to the 90g as feeders but 7 of them survived and are now breeding.  They adapt to all water conditions and eat anything.  I put these in my classroom for the kids to watch and use them as a year long biology lesson.

Currently keeping.

Honduran Red Point (Archocentrus sp.)

Got a bunch of these from Richard at the start to spring.  He had a few pairs that were breeding like wildfire and couldn't get rid of them.  I put three pairs in a 55g and all three found a territory and laid eggs.  I was amazed!

Currently keeping.

Blackbelt Cichlid (Paraneetroplus maculicauda)

Only have one of these and she used to be my favorite fish.  She runs the 90g but isn't cruel, you leave her alone she leaves you alone.  The colors on these fish may appear drab but the speckled black (the belt) is very attractive.  I hope to get some more and try breeding at some point in the future.
